March Meeting

concertsPosted by Monica Fri, February 26, 2010 16:39:01

Change of Time and Venue

This month the Music Club will be held on Wednesday 10th at 18.00 hrs - at the Maison des Associations. The theme will be 'Spring'

I thought that this might be more convenient for people - not having to trek out to Bourcefranc. I will bring the hi-fi and could also bring a laptop so if you have music DVDs we could play them. I will also bring the kettle to make tea or coffee! Please let me know.

Amitiés

Monica

January meeting

concertsPosted by Monica Mon, January 11, 2010 19:17:48
Dear All

A reminder that the January meeting will be Chez Cherry on Wednesday evening 27th January at 19.30 hrs.

The theme this month is Film Music - so bring your cds with any music which has been used in a film - this gives you lots of scope - from Shostakovich to John Williams - not forgetting pieces like the Warsaw Concerto and other standard 'classics' which have featured in soundtracks.

Larry is a great film buff and is very knowledgeable in this field - we may well give him the floor to explain some of the complexities to us. I am looking forward to it.

I have also had a suggestion that we have an expedition to the Opera House in Bordeaux for a show - easy to get there by train or car (not so easy to park!) More later.

I also add the details of the next (and I think the last of the series) Simulcast from New York's Metropolitan Opera. Those who have been to previous showings have raved about them - so do give this most accessible opera a try!

Amitiés
Monica

CINE OPERA Friday 16th January:
At 20h, "Carmen" en direct du Métropolitan Opera de New-York.
Atlantic Ciné, La Champagne St Georges à SAINTES

Special Event in October!

concertsPosted by Monica Fri, September 25, 2009 12:33:12

ROD DAVIS AT THE RIBEROU

OCT 9th 2009 7.30 for 8pm

The History/Music event for October promises to be something rather special and not to be missed!

To start with, the history and music have been cleverly intertwined with a little touch of ‘history’ imagination - whetted your appetite? - read on and all will be revealed!

The Association has managed something of a ‘coup’ in that a personal friend of 2 members just happens to be paying them a visit in October and has agreed to provide an impromptu evening of entertainment with a difference. The ‘celebrity’ is Rod Davis (pictured in action above) who grew up near Liverpool in the same village as John Lennon and was invited in 1956 to join John’s schoolboy skiffle group, The Quarrymen, which was inspired by Lonnie Donegan’s recording of ‘Rock Island Line’. He played banjo with them for over a year, appearing with them at the Cavern and was eventually replaced by Paul McCartney. Since that time Rod has played many different kinds of music from New Orleans Jazz to Bluegrass, from classical guitar to country fiddle.

The Quarrymen got back together in 1997 with five musicians from that original 1957 line-up and since then they have played in many countries including Japan, Russia, the USA, Canada, Cuba and most of Europe. As well as touring with the Quarrymen, Rod also appears on his own, presenting an entertaining mix of music and anecdotes about his early days in Liverpool and the origins of the band who became the Beatles.

Rod will perform for us on Friday evening 9th October from 8pm and plans 2 x 45 minute sessions with an interval in between. Rod will endeavour to bring from UK, along with his instruments and PA equipment, a tea-chest bass and washboard so that members can be invited to join in and contribute to the evening’s entertainment.

The Association has managed to arrange The Hotel de Riberou in Saujon (recent Friday morning coffee locale this past summer) to open privately for this evening and to lay on a drinks bar as required. The venue has a booking ceiling of 50 which we expect to be fully taken up - indeed word has leaked and bookings are already being taken! A small charge of 3/5 Euros will be taken on the door but because we expect all places to be filled, please reserve your places on the basis of ‘no show’ you will be expected to pay as we would not be surprised if regrettably we have to turn people away.

Reservations with Dave and Jean Gilchrist on 05 46 06 19 68 or on email dave_i_gilchrist@yahoo.com. All email bookings will be confirmed by return.

The hotel has suggested that they could lay on a chef to prepare crepes should the take-up justify it. Please indicate when you book a yes or no on crepes so that we can coordinate with the Hotel if sufficient numbers require it! Doors will not open to guests until 7.30 pm so please do not arrive before this time.

Finally should you require any further info please contact Dave or Jean and you can obtain more info on The Quarrymen on their site: www.originalquarrymen.co.uk.

May Choice for the group

concertsPosted by Monica Fri, May 01, 2009 18:53:45
If you have ploughed through the previous posts , you will have seen that there is a wealth of concerts to choose from - and these are only the ones I have found out about - the list is by no means exhaustive.

The concert I thought we all might enjoy takes place in Saintes on Sunday 24th May at 17.30h in the Cathedral (St Pierre), Place du Synode, 17100 Saintes given by the London Welsh Male Voice Choir. So this is the Music Group choice for May.

There is an admission charge for this concert of 15 euros per person - but all the monies raised are going to Secours Populaire Francais - a very worthwhile charity supporting children and poor families, not just in France but overseas as well.

This should give us a real contrast with the Boys choir from last month, and next month there is another choral concert either in Royan or St Sornin and then in July, of course, there is 'le Violon sur le Sable' - so we have more treats to look forward to!

Happy Listening!

Musical Events in May

concertsPosted by Monica Fri, May 01, 2009 16:10:29
Dear All

Firstly - thank you to John for organising our new Blog space.

There is a bit of a problem as far as multi access is concerned - so, if you have news you would like to add to the blog - just send it to me in an email and I will publish it. Hope to sort the access out soon.

We are into the 'Spoilt for choice' season in the Charente Maritime with the opening of the very rich summer selection of concerts and events.

In no particular order - I have tried to keep the concerts together in their towns of performance.

Saujon: All the following are at 20.30hrs at the Salicorne, tickets are 15 euros, or you can buy a 5 concert ticket for 35 euros before 12th May and 40 euros after that, from the Tourist Office, Place de l'Eglise, Saujon Tel: 05 46 02 83 77

Tuesday 12th May: KALOOME a mix of music and dance - Catalan Rumba - given by a small group of Majorcan musicians.

Friday 15th May: L'ODITION a mixture of slapstick and music to appeal to all ages.

Tuesday 19th May: PETER BULTINK an original and charismatic singer, with virtuoso piano accompaniment.

Tuesday 26th May: THE POITOU CHARENTES ORCHESTRA with a programme of Bruno Mantovani (a contemporary composer) and Francis Poulenc: The Human Voice - a piece for Soprano and orchestra based on a work by Jean Cocteau.

Friday 29th May: GRIEG IN BLUE - the Norwegian saxophonist Helene Arntzen pays homage to Grieg and wonders how he would have composed if he had been introduced to jazz.

All these concerts also feature an exhibition of paintings by various artists.

Not part of the above series, but also at the Salicorne, on Thursday 21st May an Operetta - The Musketeers at the Convent at 15 hrs, tickets 18, 24 and 30 euros depending on position. Further information from the bookshop, Lignes d'Horizons, Place de l'Eglise, Saujon, tel: 05 46 22 63 81

I am about to run out of room, will do another post for the other concerts.

Amities

Monica
